Land Meets Sea at The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

Sure, they may seem like two different foods hailing from opposite ends of the food chain, but at Cowfish, they share the same plate and in some cases, the same bite. Since opening in 2010, The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar’s inventive menu featuring fusion favorites like the Bento Box, a combo meal featuring both burger and sushi, and Burgushi, sushi rolled with classic burger components, has built up quite a loyal fan base.

The buzz hasn’t stopped in Charlotte. Cowfish has expanded to locations in Raleigh and Orlando, and is looking forward to opening its newest location in Atlanta in early 2016.

We stopped by Cowfish’s Charlotte location on a Monday night and decided to sit out on their breezy patio. As a bit of a patio snob, I’m surprised I hadn’t dined outside at Cowfish before. There are plenty of seats, fans for a refreshing break from the summer heat and even peaceful fountain views.

From the moment we sat down we were impressed by the level of service provided by the staff. Our friendly server walked us through the menu and even gave us some recommendations of her favorite dishes. After some serious contemplation we went with their new fusion dish, The All-American Bacon Double Cheeseburgooshi Roll, The King’s Roll and The Jalapeño Popper Show–Stopper burger.

First up was the Cheeseburgooshi. All of the classic burger fixin’s rolled up into a bite size sushi roll. They even made sure the ketchup and pickles weren’t left out. The All-American Bacon Double Cheeseburgooshi Roll is paired with a side of fries, and is a perfect fusion dish for those who want the best of both worlds.

Next was The King’s Roll: fresh tuna, kani, jalapeño, cream cheese and scallions inside a sushi roll, coated with panko and flash fried. The roll is then topped with kani salad, masago and sriracha, and served with ponzu dipping sauce. I couldn’t decide so we trusted our server’s recommendation on this one, and we unanimously decided it may be one of the best sushi rolls either of us had ever had.

Although a sushi-lover himself, Jonathan ordered The Jalapeño Popper Show–Stopper burger.  Just one of Cowfish’s handcrafted options, this burger was a half-pound beef patty topped with jalapeño-infused cream cheese, jalapeño bacon, fried jalapeños, jalapeño citrus aioli, lettuce, tomato and fresh sliced jalapeños, served up on a brioche bun.

If you haven’t been already, make The Cowfish your next date night or family dinner destination. With a menu covering everything from a heavenly Crab Rangoon dip to sixteen hand-spun milkshakes (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), there’s a little something for everyone.
